Roanoke, Virginia Vein Treatment Services
Our Virginia vein treatment center offers a wide range of minimally invasive, state-of-the-art solutions to help you get rid of varicose veins and spider veins without the need for invasive vein surgery. Our treatment options include EVLA, ambulatory phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy, all in the convenience of our Roanoke vein treatment clinic and under the care of board-certified vein specialist Dr. Martin Smith.
Do you have a “heavy” feeling in your legs, as if you’ve been standing all day, or do your legs feel sore and painful? If so, you may be suffering from venous reflux disease, a chronic, progressive condition that may eventually lead to the development of ulcers in the legs. At Virginia Skin & Vein, Dr. Smith will find a minimally invasive treatment plan to get rid of varicose veins that is tailored to your needs.
We offer the following vein treatments:
Duplex ultrasound
Duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic tool that allows us to examine the blood flow in your veins and determine the extent of any vein disease. Based on the results of your ultrasound, we will recommend an individualized treatment plan to treat you using the most effective, minimally invasive treatment options available at our Roanoke vein treatment clinic.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Endovenous laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure to get rid of varicose veins that in the past would have required invasive vein surgery. EVLA can be performed in the comfort and convenience of our Virginia vein treatment center, without the need for general anesthesia. During EVLA, a laser is used to seal the vein closed, and the procedure is usually performed in less than an hour. EVLA involves minimal discomfort, leaves no scars, and allows patients to resume their normal activities the next day.
Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is now the accepted gold standard to get rid of varicose veins and spider veins. During sclerotherapy, a very small needle – the size of a human hair – is used to inject a solution known as a “sclerosing agent” into the vein. The solution causes the lining of the vein to swell, and the vein shuts down. The body eventually absorbs the treated vein. The procedure takes only a matter of minutes, although several sessions may be required to get rid of varicose veins completely.
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
We use ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy at our Virginia vein treatment clinic to locate and treat deeper veins that are not visible on the surface. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is particularly helpful in treating larger, non-saphenous varicose veins.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy (or Microphlebectomy)
During ambulatory phlebectomy (also known as microphlebectomy), short varicose vein segments are removed through a series of tiny incisions. Ambulatory phlebectomy is performed in our Roanoke vein treatment center, usually with local anesthesia. Because the incisions are so small, ambulatory phlebectomy rarely requires stitches and leaves virtually no scarring. The procedure usually takes less than an hour, and patients can return to routine activities the next day.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
On your first visit to Virginia Skin & Vein, we will obtain a complete medical history and take the time to discuss any special concerns you may have. We will thoroughly examine your veins, and will conduct a complete but painless duplex ultrasound exam. We will then recommend a minimally invasive course of treatment to help you get rid of varicose veins and return to your regular activities as quickly as possible.
Patients come to our Virginia vein treatment center from a wide geographic area, including the towns of Blacksburg, Danville, and Lynchburg; nearby West Virginia counties such as Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Mercer and Monroe; and communities along the North Carolina border.
